Guerrero: We’ve got Peruvians dreaming

At the age of 27, Paolo Guerrero is enduring something of a bittersweet moment in his career. A legal case with implications that some say spring straight from the pages of George Orwell's "1984" is headed to the Supreme Court in November, and its outcome could have a major impact on one of the Bay Area's biggest murder cases in the past decade.
The case pits constitutional rights of privacy and protection from unfair police tactics against high-tech government surveillance. It has already drawn analogies to the "Big Brother"-type government intrusion Orwell envisioned in his novel.
Critics of the warrantless tracking say that without checks, police could routinely monitor everyone's location, all the time. Others say police are already free to conduct surveillance by simply following people around, and there is no legal difference between trailing someone by car or on foot and using technology to, in effect, do the same thing.
"We don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy when we are out on public streets," said Anthony Barkow, director of the Center for the Administration of Criminal Law at New York University Law School. "Police can do it without technology. This (case) is just sexier because it is high tech."

Roma striker Pablo Osvaldo believes the club have finally turned a corner after a difficult start to the season.
Osvaldo's second-half header gave Roma their first Serie A win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Parma.
The result eased pressure on new Roma boss Luis Enrique who has made a poor start to his career in Italy which included just two points from their first three league fixtures until Sunday's game.
Roma also crashed out of the Europa League in the play-offs under Enrique's charge.

It's taken 24 centuries, the work of archaeologists, scholars and historians, and the advent of the Internet to make the Dead Sea Scrolls accessible to anyone in the world. Today, as the new year approaches on the Hebrew calendar, we're celebrating the launch of the Dead Sea Scrolls online; a project of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem powered by Google technology.
Written between the third and first centuries BCE, the Dead Sea Scrolls include the oldest known biblical manuscripts in existence. In 68 BCE, they were hidden in 11 caves in the Judean desert on the shores of the Dead Sea to protect them from the approaching Roman armies. They weren't discovered again until 1947, when a Bedouin shepherd threw a rock in a cave and realized something was inside. Since 1965, the scrolls have been on exhibit at the Shrine of the Book at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Among other topics, the scrolls offer critical insights into life and religion in ancient Jerusalem, including the birth of Christianity.
Now, anyone around the world can view, read and interact with five digitized Dead Sea Scrolls. The high resolution photographs, taken by Ardon Bar-Hama, are up to 1,200 megapixels, almost 200 times more than the average consumer camera, so viewers can see even the most minute details in the parchment. Oceans Are now Blamed for Lack of Global Warming Trend
Editor's Note: In addition to volcanoes, China, aerosals and the burning of fossil fuels, oceans are now fingered for the reason why global warming hasn't manifested in the way it was so definitively predicted 10 years ago.
In the scramble to implement policy in the face of a changing reality, advocates for anthropogenic global warming have turned to hysterical tactics to justify the need to curb CO2. They have recently dismissed all skeptics by categorizing them as white male conservatives and suggested that space aliens are a good reason to tax us whenever we exhale.
Recently, HSBC has hired troops to clear land in Uganda to realize carbon tax credits. Indigenous homes were burned to the ground and at least one 8-year old child was burned to death as a result.

PM: Afghanistan facing 'vital year'
David Cameron has been forced to abandon a visit to British troops in a frontline base amid fears that the Taliban were trying to bring down his helicopter.
The Prime Minister had been due to fly in to the patrol base at Shahzad in Helmand province to meet troops from the 1st Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.
But at the last minute the RAF Chinook helicopter carrying Mr Cameron and his entourage was diverted to the main operating base in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah.
A Government source said that mobile telephone "chatter" had been intercepted in the area referring to a possible attempt to bring down a helicopter.

Juventus winger Milos Krasic was a relieved man after his second-half equaliser enabled Juventus to stay top of Serie A following a 1-1 draw with Catania on Sunday.
It's been almost a year to the day since Krasic's superb hat-trick against Cagliari, and the Serbian winger was just happy that his 49th minute strike kept Juve top with eight points from four games.

Palermo held Lazio to a goalless draw in the Serie A match at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon.
